President Donald Trump announced his nomination of Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to serve as secretary of Homeland Security effective March 31, replacing Kristi Noem, who is being reassigned to the role of special envoy for The Shield of the Americas.
In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump praised Mullin as a “MAGA Warrior, and former undefeated professional MMA fighter” who “truly gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda.”
Trump vowed that Mullin “will work tirelessly” to protect border security and thwart migrant crime and drug trafficking. While Mullin’s nomination is still subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate, he is expected to receive the votes necessary to assume the new position, as Republicans hold 53 of 100 U.S. Senate seats and one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, has already said he would vote to confirm him.
Here are five things to know about Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
