Harvard University President Claudine Gay, the first Black leader of the nation’s most prestigious university, has resigned, she wrote in a message to the Harvard community Tuesday.
She stepped down after months of contending with interlocking crises over the Israel-Hamas war, campus antisemitism, and allegations of plagiarism in her scholarly works.
Harvard’s provost, Dr. Alan Garber, will serve as interim president.

Her brief term is an anomaly at the nation’s oldest university, where presidencies often span upwards of a decade. The previous shortest tenure as Harvard president was Cornelius Conway Felton, who took office in 1860 and died of a heart condition in 1862. The longest tenure belongs to Charles William Eliot, who led the school from 1869 to 1909.
Harvard’s provost, Dr. Alan Garber, will serve as interim president.

Ibram X. Kendi defends Gay, calls plagiarism allegations a mask for racism — 5:04 p.m.

Ibram X. Kendi, director of Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research, condemned Claudine Gay’s exit from Harvard as the product of “anti-Black” attacks made by a “racist mob.”
In a series of Tweets posted on X, Kendi said allegations of plagiarism by Gay were just a way to justify removing her from a leadership role. The allegations allowed racist critics to deny that they were judging Gay by her race, he said.
